Idaho trip, 7/21 - 7/28 2010
Shadow of a bridge we were walking on. One cannot walk on the ground, because it may can in and one will be scalded to death. Some of the geysers have large pools. That's me, 3rd from the left, taking a picture of my shadow at one of the geysers.one of the hot springs has claimed a human life. As in many of the pools around Yellowstone, the water in this pretty pool is usually within a few degrees of boiling. There is little hope of surviving a fall into such a pool.

Steam Vents are cracks in the surface of the ground through which pressurized steam from below escapes to the surface, oftentimes with a hissing sound.Geysers are hot springs that erupt periodically. The eruptions is the result of super-heated water below-ground becoming trapped in channels leading to the surface. The biggest elk we'd ever seen, with a antler span of approx. 6' across, tip to tip. He was just sitting in the shade about 200' away, totally unscathed by the crowd watching him.The elk from a "safe" distance....hahaha.

Yellowstone National Park holds one of the nationís richest collections of natural wonders. With its geothermal features, abundant animals and more than 2 million acres of sprawling wilderness, Yellowstone is one of North Americaís greatest assets."the perfect geyser" Old Faithful became somewhat of a washing machine for early expeditions and traders who would put their clothes in and let the force and heat of the water spouting rid their garments of dirt. Preserved within Yellowstone National Park are Old Faithful Geyser and some 10,000 hot springs and geysers, the majority of the planet's total. These geothermal wonders are evidence of one of the world's largest active volcanoes; its last eruption created a crater or caldera that spans almost half of the park. There is a semi-circle of benches, 2-tier high, where people can sit and see the eruption. We were able to sit on the front row.
